About Sonja Bouwer

I am registered with ASCHP as well as CPSC and work independently. I work with KSM Church as well as CPF (Community Policing Forum) in the Centurion area.

Working as a volunteer in State Hospitals, experience has taught me that we all see people and form our own opinions about their state of mind, BUT if you take the time to talk to them, you will see that there is much more to the exposed surface.

I have a passion for the unseen, the unspoken, the hidden.

Separating the experience of trauma into the brain-body-mind connection can help to simplify and normalize the trauma response and provide a framework for effective healing.

In the healing process, I assist clients to slow down and notice the distinctions. The purpose of this is to normalize the experience of responding to trauma and to teach clients how to calm themselves down and to settle their bodies and minds.

In creating a safe environment without judgement or prejudice, I am available for anyone who would like to make use of the opportunity to communicate their innermost thoughts and feelings.

I make use of the person-centred approach and Victim Empowerment in the sessions. You have the strength in you to overcome the difficulties with which you are faced. You are given the supportive environment to express feelings and thoughts while receiving guidance to find the best possible solution for your life.

What to expect from  a counselling session

  • Safe space: A therapist provides a confidential, non-judgmental environment to process difficult emotions and experiences.
  • Coping skills: Counselling can equip you with healthy strategies for managing flashbacks, anxiety, and other trauma symptoms, steering you away from self-destructive behaviors.
  • Processing the event: Therapy is a gradual process that helps you to make sense of what happened. This allows you to integrate the experience into your life rather than being controlled by it.
  • Healing is a process: Therapy helps you move toward healing and a more fulfilling life. It is not about immediately eliminating all painful memories but rather about learning to cope and find a "new normal".
